Amorgos
Discover The Secret
Jewel Of The Cyclades
Learn Greek Cooking On Amorgos
This experience allows clients to learn the secrets of producing some of the food you will enjoy on your holiday. You will go out into the fields and onto farms to help pick the very best produce for you to prepare traditional Greek fare at one of the tavernas.
Nikos will share generations of family recipes with you and invite you to try your hand at preparing the dishes. You will see in the fishermen on the quay and with guidance choose a fish of the day and then take it to a nearby taverna where Andonis and his family will show you how to prepare and cook it.
Work as an apprentice in the kitchen with qualified chefs who will guide you to prepare some dishes of the day for fellow guests and of course yourself. Learn some tricks of the trade and take back home your skills to practice on family and friends.
Helping Illias in the old stone olive press will earn you some oil to use in the old kitchens of Langada cooking over an open fire. Maria in Tholaria will guide you in the preserving of capers which Nicolas her husband will have shown you on the cliff sides. This experience really gets you close to the local people, their life and their cuisine. We don't guarantee you total success but you will have great fun trying to achieve it!
Water Colour Painting On Amorgos
The Water Colour Painting Courses are again for beginners but also for those who have been painting for years but wish to improve their technique. The light and incredible colours of the flowers, the mountains, the sea and the sky give fantastic opportunities to be creative. The tranquility of the island gives an ideal opportunity to concentrate on your art.
The artists we use to give help and advise have all been painting on the island for years. They will be able to guide you in both composition and technique as well as taking you to locations that will enable you to practice your skills to achieve the ultimate results.
We even have an art gallery set up at the hotel for these courses so that you can display your work, if you wish, and also have an opportunity to earn some ‘holiday money’ by putting your paintings up for sale. You will not have time to record in water colour all the wonderful sights you will experience but with the use of a camera and sketch pad you will have enough material to keep you going at home for the rest of the year.
Photography On Amorgos
The Photography Courses are designed for beginners and experts alike. In seven sessions over the fourteen days on Amorgos you will look at how a camera works, types of cameras, lenses and film. You will discuss whether photography is an art or a science, camera tricks and the pains of modern processing.
Our resident specialist Robin Eley Jones is a professional free lance photographer and has been behind the camera now for 42 years. His pictures have been published in 18 books, most national newspapers and numerous magazines. He has also had his work used for advertisements, posters and on television. Robin will concentrate on getting the very best from your camera, whether you have a state of the art DSLR or a point and press automatic.
During the course you will photograph many of the incredible sights on Amorgos. Gently sauntering around the villages and hills you will look at calculating exposures, shutter speeds, apertures, focusing, colour balance and of course composition. Local characters will be coerced into posing for you and Robin will try to get cats, dogs and even donkeys to stay still long enough for you to photograph them. Half way through the course we will arrange to have two films processed for you so that you can discuss the results and work on even further improvements. You can display your results, if you wish, in the gallery at the hotel.
